I’ve been using various forks of Vyatta for years. They’ve served me well, but they all share something in common: their foundations trace back to the last community release of Vyatta, now approaching a decade and a half old.
That legacy comes with technical debt that’s increasingly difficult to ignore. Whether it’s performance bottlenecks, architectural limitations, or the difficulty of introducing new CLI functionality, there are times when maintaining compatibility with the past gets in the way of moving forward.
Rather than continue working around those limitations, I decided to build something of my own.
The goal was straightforward: create a router operating system that feels familiar to anyone who’s used Vyatta or its derivatives, but without inheriting the codebase and architectural constraints that come with them.
That project is nVyR (pronounced Never), short for Not Vyatta Router.
Release 0.1.0 can be found at: https://github.com/l0crian1/nVyR
This is very much still a work in progress, so I’d use caution if wanting to use it in production.
Current features are:
- Interfaces:
- Bridge
- Dummy
- Ethernet
- Loopback
Virtual-Ethernet (veth)
- Routing
- BGP
- Static
- Firewall
